Passive Voice

 Passive Voice

Passive voice merupakan suatu bentuk gramatikal dimana subject menerima aksi/ditindaklanjuti oleh agent lain. Rumus umum dari konstruksi ini yaitu: S + auxiliary verb + past participle (V3).

Rumus dan Contoh Passive Voice pada Tenses:

Auxiliary untuk membentuk konstruksi pasif pada tenses dapat berupa auxiliary be (is, are, was, were), kombinasi antara dua primary auxiliary (is/are being, was/were being, has/have been), atau antara primary dengan modal helping verb (will be, will have been). Auxialiary tersebut dipadukan dengan past participle untuk membentuk passive verb form.

CARA MENGUBAH KALIMAT INTERROGATIVE DAN NEGATIF KE KALIMAT PASIF

Mengubah kalimat negatif ke kalimat pasif

Jika ingin mengubah kalimat negatif ke kalimat pasif, “not” diletakkan di antara “is/am/are/was/were” dan “being”.

Contoh:

Kalimat aktif: She is not writing a story.

menjadi

Kalimat Pasif: A story is not being written by her.

Mengubah kalimat pertanyaan (interrogative) ke kalimat pasif

Bentuk pasif kalimat pertanyaan dimulai dengan be (is/am/are). Jika kalimat aktif dimulai dengan kata tanya seperti when, whose, why, which, dan how, maka kalimat pasif juga dimulai dengan kata tanya. Jika kalimat aktif dimulai dengan kata tanya “who” atau “whose”, maka kalimat pasif dimulai dengan by whom atau by whose. Jika kalimat aktif dimulai dengan whom, kalimat pasif dimulai dengan who.

Contoh:

Kalimat aktif: Are the masons building a house?

menjadi

Kalimat Pasif: Is a house being built by the masons?

Kalimat aktif: Who is waiting for you?

menjadi

Kalimat pasif: By whom are you being waited for?

Kalimat aktif: Whom are you waiting for?

menjadi

Kalimat Pasif: Who is being waited for by you?

Kalimat aktif: Why is he not learning his lessons?

menjadi

Kalimat pasif: Why are his lessons not being learned by him?

Kalimat aktif: Whose father is helping you?

menjadi

Kalimat pasif: By whose father are you being helped?

TEXT STRUCTURE

TEXT STRUCTURE

Pay attention to the table below.

These are the structures of application letters. YOUR TASK: find an example of an application letter and try to identify its text structure.

No.   Parts of the Application Letter

1      Your address

2      The address of the company you are writing to. Use complete title and            address; don't abbreviate.

3      Always make an effort to write directly to the person in charge of hiring.

4      Opening paragraph – Use this paragraph to specify which job you are                applying for, or, if you are writing to inquire whether a job position is open,         question the availability of an opening.

5       Middle paragraph(s)/body – This section should be used to highlight              your work experience which most closely matches the desired job                        requirements presented in the job opening advertisement. Do not simply             restate what is contained in your resume, but give strong reasons why you           are suited to the position.

6       Closing paragraph – Use the closing paragraph to ensure action on the              part of the reader. One possibility is to ask for an interview appointment              time. Make it easy for the personnel department to contact you by                      providing your telephone number and email address.

7      Always sign the application letter. ("enclosure" indicates that you are             enclosing your resume.)

WARMER: WORD FINDING

The following is a list of top 10 qualities of a good friend. However, the words are written connectedly with one another. The capitalization is not correct, either. Find the ten words by reading carefully these two groups of seemingly-nonsense words from the left top down and then up to the right and down again. As an example, the first quality is trustworthy. What are the other nine qualities? Work in pairs and compete to be the quickest in finding them.
